Team-In-Training 2015

Team-in-Training-Leukemia-and-Lymphoma-Society-LogoI am part of a group called Team-In-Training (TNT). TNT is the world’s largest and most successful charity sports endurance training program. TNT helps to train people to run/walk half-marathons and marathons, swim, bike and run a triathlon, embark on a century bike ride (100 miles) or set out on a hiking adventure. Since its inception in 1988, TNT has raised more than $1.4 billion, trained more than 600,000 people and helped its parent organization, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), invest more than $1 billion in research to advance breakthrough cancer treatments that are saving lives today.

In 2014, LLS invested $79.8 million in blood cancer research. The research funded by LLS has played a role in advances such as the discovery and development of chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new oral therapies and immunotherapies. In addition to investing in cancer research, they also provide critical information and support for patients and their families. They have provided over $237 million to help blood cancer patients afford health-insurance premiums and prescription drugs co-pay. LLS also works to enact state and federal laws and regulations that ensure patients can access the care and treatments they need.

I first became familiar with TNT a few years ago when Jill joined them as she prepared to run the full marathon. I discovered then all the good they did in the area of blood cancers. So when I decided to prove to myself that I could get in shape to run 13.1 miles, I knew I wanted to be part of TNT as well. And though I might have doubts about my decision to run the half-marathon, I have no second thoughts about training with TNT.

Part of the training program involves raising money for LLS, and Jill and I have set a goal of raising $3600. If you would like to help with our efforts, you can donate on our team page. Visit the Team Vershel page, click on “donate” and search for our team by my name, then click on our page.  If you have problems with getting to the page, send me an email at mvershel@fumcmc.org. Also, if you want me to run in honor or memory of a person who you know that has battled with or is battling now with cancer, send me their name and we will write them on our TNT shirts.

Thank you for being part of the team and praying for all those who lives have been changed because of cancer! You all are the best of the best of the best…

Breathe Peace,
