Dancing with the Star

Throughout the Bible, we find images that compare the relationship God desires to have with us as a dance. My favorite is found in the writings of a minor prophet, Zephaniah, when he writes, “The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” The word exult means to jump, leap, spin around, or dance with passion and emotion. God exults; God dances over us.

Not only does God dance over us, He wants to dance with us. It is how God created us; He created us to dance, to dance with Him. In dancing, one leads and the other follows. One provides the posture and the other must relax and allow the partner to move him or her across the floor. The one who follows must mirror the leader’s steps, but the steps are done in reverse, often without being able to see where they are going. And when this is achieved in unity, the two dancers become one.

This is the dance with God; God leads and we follow. When we allow this to happen, God takes us in His arms and dances with us through life. What amazes me about this dance with God is that even someone who can’t dance, like me, can dance with God.  I don’t have to know the steps or even how to dance. All I have to do is extend my hand and surrender. I just need to relax and let Him lead.
