There was this preacher who was an avid golfer. Every chance he could get, he could be found on the golf course swinging away. It was an obsession. One Sunday was a picture perfect day for golfing. The sun was shining, no clouds in the sky and the temperature was just right. The preacher was in a quandary as to what to do. Play golf or preach… Shortly, the urge to play golf overcame him. He called his associate, told him he was sick and asked the associate to take care of the Sunday church service for him. And soon, he was standing at the 1st tee.
An angel up above was watching the preacher and was quite perturbed. She went to God and said, “Look at the preacher. He should be punished for what he is doing.” God nodded in agreement. The preacher teed up on the first hole. He swung at the ball and hit a perfect drive, straight as an arrow, four-hundred yards right to the green, where it gently rolled into the cup. A perfect hole-in-one. He was amazed and excited. The angel was a little shocked. He turned to God and said, “I thought you were going to punish him.”
God smiled. “I did. Just think about it… who can he tell?”
I can assure you, there even was a time in my life that I loved golf so much that I might have been tempted to call in “sick” every once in a while. (By the way, I never did). However, on September 29, I will be hanging out at the golf course in Quail Valley. I won’t be playing golf, I am only allowed to drive the cart and hand out water, etc. But you can play a beautiful round of golf as we celebrate the Eighth Annual Covenant Cup Golf Tournament.
The Covenant Cup is an incredible outreach event to showcase the impact First United Methodist Church Missouri City has made and is making in our community. Oh yeah, it also has been a huge support in retiring our debt so that monies can be freed up to do ministry.
As successful as the event has been over the years, I believe it can and will be even better this year. To make the Covenant Cup all it can be, I need your help. In the coming weeks, you will hear about the many opportunities that are available for you to get involved. For now, I am asking that you pray for the tournament and those who are working together to make this year’s Cup the best yet!
Thank you and breathe peace.
COVENANT CUP HELP
Over the years, the Covenant Cup Golf Tournament has raised almost $125,000 towards paying down the debt we have incurred from the purchase of the West Woods property and the building note. Because of the funds raised, we have been able to free up monies for many of our outreach ministries. This year, the Cup will happen on September 29 at Quail Valley Club. This is what you can do today to help:
• Sign up to play or put together a team. Our goal this year is over 100 golfers!
• Sponsor a hole.
• Donate sleeves of golf balls.
• Donate items for the Silent Auction.
• Volunteer to lend a hand.
If you can help, please contact Marty (email@example.com) and he will get you plugged in! Together we can make this year’s Covenant Cup the best ever!
