I am not sure how many emails like this I have written over the years. Unfortunately, there has been too many. As I watched the news come out of Christchurch, New Zealand over the weekend, my heart broke.

I have learned in times like these, that all of life is a mystery. I wish I had answers to share with you, but I do not. In fact, I am wary of any person who claims to have the answers. This is one of those events that cause us to wrestle with the most profound issues of life.

It is amid this wrestling and tears that I remember the words that Paul wrote to the church in Corinth:

For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. (1 Corinthians 9-12)

The bottom line for me is simple. God is the only one who understands. And even He has His heartbroken by what He sees. But I imagine if you are anything like me, then we all still crave answers. So, maybe all we really need to do is pray.

For those who have lost life and those working to save life
For those who are worried for people they love
For those who will see their loved ones no longer
Lord Have Mercy.

For those in need of the peace that passes all understanding
For all who turn to you in the midst of turmoil
For those who cry out to you in fear and in love
Lord Have Mercy.

For those in confusion and those in despair
For those whose tears are yet to dry
For those in need of your unending love.
Lord Have Mercy.

Breathe Peace,
