Pentecost 2019

Pentecost was originally a Jewish feast that concluded the 50 days of Passover. It celebratePentecost header squared the end of the barley harvest and the beginning of the wheat harvest. Today it is when the Jewish people celebrate the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai.

This Sunday, we will celebrate Pentecost. And while we don’t celebrate the giving of the Law or any harvest season, it is an important day in the life of the Church. It has been my experience that most of us (including me) get one or two things right about Pentecost and one thing very wrong about it.

Here is what we get right: Some people call Pentecost “the birthday of the Church.” (We will talk more about this on Sunday.) On the first Pentecost found in Acts, the Holy Spirit is poured out and a group of guys are empowered to share the Good News of Jesus. This group grows and a mish-mash of people who form a community “do life together.”

But here is what we get wrong: Pentecost didn’t just happen once, a long, long time ago. The Book of Acts tells story after story when the Spirit is poured out and amazing things happen, and it is Pentecost again. There is story after story in the history of the Church when the Spirit comes, revivals happen and it is Pentecost again. And finally, there are people here in our community, that are touched by the Spirit and lives are changed and it is Pentecost again.
Pentecost isn’t over!! And I believe that this Sunday, this week at VBS, the Spirit will be poured out, amazing things will happen, and lives will be changed! And it will be Pentecost again.
