Post-General Conference Update

2019-General-Conference-Logo-2070

As many of you already know, the special called session of General Conference 2019 has come to an end. The delegates passed an amended Traditionalist Plan which means there is no change to the United Methodist Church’s teaching and stance regarding human sexuality. There are portions of the plan which have already been ruled to conflict with the UMC constitution. Therefore, the Plan will be referred to our Judicial Council for review.

I want to be honest with you. I do not know what all of this means for the future of the Plan and of the United Methodist Church. And while there might be things I do not know, there are things I am certain of:

– I know that there are hurting people on both sides of the debate. No one walks away from this without being wounded in some way.

– I know that I am still the Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church Missouri City.

– I know that our congregation is one of the more diverse congregations in the Texas Annual Conference. We are a congregation of many different cultures and filled with people of just about every color. We are a congregation that has Democrats, Republicans and Independents, blue collar and white collar, rich, middle class and poor, young and old all sitting together in the same pews. And yes, we are a church with people of the heterosexual and the LGBTQIA community holding hands with each other as they are reminded that each one is the best of the best of the best.

– I know that we will worship together in one service (10:30 in the Sanctuary) this coming Sunday; in the midst of worship, we will be standing on Common Ground at the Cross and the Table.

I am sure there are more things I know, but this is already longer than Matt wanted it to be. So, I will close with these last words.

I am honored to be your pastor, and I love each of you. Together, we move forward as we make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Breathe Peace,

Pictures of Grace

Last week in Open Skies, I invited people to create Pictures of Grace. And people responded in amazing ways. As I was looking at the pictures left on the altar, it dawned on me that, because of the preaching schedule, only the Open Skies service was given the opportunity to create Pictures of Grace. And that was a mistake!

So, you are invited and encouraged to create your masterpiece! I am including a link to a video that will help you in making your creation! You can watch it HEREPlease use crayons and a half-piece of 8.5 x 11 card stock! (We supplied these for Open Skies so it’s important that you use the same materials!) I hope you will create your Pictures of Grace and share it with us. You can drop it off at the church office, email it to us or bring it with you Sunday! Either way, grab some crayons and create!

We will display the pictures this Sunday so as you walk into the Sanctuary; you will be able to experience grace in an artistic, creative and fantastic way!

Here are some examples from last week . . .
