“I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power.”
“For most of us, the great danger is not that we will renounce our faith – it’s that we will become so distracted, rushed and preoccupied that we will settle for a mediocre version of it. We will just skim through our lives, instead of fully living them.”
— John Ortberg
There is a great story in the Book of Acts about a young man who fell asleep during one of the Apostle Paul’s sermons. Not only did he fall asleep, he fell asleep while sitting near an open window. But wait, it gets worse. Because the young man fell asleep near an open window, he ended up falling out of the window to the ground below. Now you know – sleeping in church can be hazardous to your health.
But the truth is many of us have fallen asleep. Many of us have been following Jesus for so long that we often shift to autopilot and are just going through the motions. Maybe, as we begin the New Year, we can wake up and make some changes in the way we approach our faith. And here’s the catch…in order to fully wake up, the changes might be more than a simple tweak here or there. We actually may have to make some radical changes so that we can fully experience the abundant life Jesus offers.
The term radical is misunderstood today. When we say the word radical, most people think of a person who is “over the top” or an extremist, either religiously or politically. Or we use the word radical as a synonym for “cool” or “hip.”
But actually, the word “radical” comes from the 14th century Latin word “radicalis” which means “from the roots.” What “radical” means is to be rooted in the original. What we need today are radical believers. Not fanatical believers, but radical believers who go back to the original words of Jesus. We need radical believers without all of the trappings and all of the traditions, without all the rules, regulations and restrictions that we have made up. We need to go back to what it means to follow Jesus. That’s a radical believer.
Join us for this new series but be forewarned, you may be called a radical by the time we are done!
