STAR-WARS-2017-CAROUSEL-final

EPISODE I: November 19 – The Rebel Alliance

EPISODE II: November 26 – The Power of the Dark Side

EPISODE III: December 3 – May The Force Be With You

It’s been more than 30 years since Star Wars first exploded into theaters, but the swashbuckling sci-fi films from writer-director George Lucas have left a legacy no other blockbuster has surpassed. The impact Star Wars has made on the world goes beyond pop culture and movies. A quick Google search shows that the epic film series continues to influence politics, science and technology.  And it appears it has found its way into the world of theology and religion (in the U.K. over 400,000 people identify their religion as Jedi).

I have come to believe that perhaps the power of Star Wars isn’t the special effects, the music or even the overarching theme of good vs. evil. I think what draws so many to the galaxy that is far, far away is, central to the entire saga, the idea of rebellion. And perhaps the central message of the Star Wars movies is found in a line in last year’s Star Wars release, Rogue One.

The group of discouraged leaders of the Rebellion saw no way to resist the all-too powerful Evil Empire. These rebels were about to give up and turn away. But the heroine of this movie, Jyn Erso, faced them down saying to them, “The Rebellion is built on hope.”

Star-Wars-Rogue-One-Jyn-Erso-character-posterCentral to the meaning of Christmas is Rebellion. It is about a different set of priorities, a different vision for all humanity. It is about a world turned right-side up in the direction of God’s Promised Kingdom. It is about a rebellion; a rebellion built on hope!

But over the years something happened that caused us to give up the Rebellion and its different set of priorities and vision. Too often, we have replaced the central meaning of Christmas with long lines, traffic jams and shopping lists. The Rebellion that is built on hope has been overrun by a season of stress and anxiety. And when it’s all over, we are often left exhausted and empty with a feeling that something was missing.

I don’t know about you, but I want this year to be different. I want to Join the Rebellion!  You see, I believe that if we Join the Rebellion then Christmas can, once again, be a world-changing event. I believe that Christmas can once again be a season of hope and a season of peace, joy and revolutionary love. Will you Join the Rebellion?
