Fasting has been a major emphasis in the lives of many of the great spiritual leaders throughout history. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist denomination, fasted every Wednesday and Friday and required all of his clergy to do the same. Effective ministers of God from the apostle Paul to Martin Luther to John Calvin made it a continual part of their walks with God.
This Lent I invite you to participate in a food-fast with me. You can choose to fast for the entire Lenten season or for a certain number of days during Lent or choose to fast one day a week. Here are some examples of different fasts for you to consider:
- The Full Fast…Drink only liquids.
- The Daniel Fast…Eat no meat, no sweets and no bread. Drink water and juice. Eat fruits and vegetables.
- The Wesley Fast…Drink only water from sundown to 3:00 pm the following day.
- The Partial Fast…Fast from sunrise to sundown. You can choose to do a full fast or a Daniel fast.
After discussing the various options, Jill and I have made a covenant to do a full fast from sunrise to sundown on the Wednesdays during Lent.
